How to add llms.txt to WordPress

There are two honest routes: let an SEO plugin generate it, or upload a file yourself.

Route 1: Yoast SEO (from Yoast's help article)

Steps, quoted from yoast.com/help/enable-llmstxt:

1. In your WordPress Dashboard, go to Yoast SEO
2. Go to Settings
3. Go to Site Features
4. Under AI tools, go to LLMS.txt
5. Toggle the switch to on
6. Click Save changes

To choose the pages yourself: same place → Customize llms.txt file → Manual page selection → add pages → Save. Gotchas Yoast lists:

• "llms.txt is not available for multisite."
• If you see "Your llms.txt file couldn't be auto-generated", "check the permissions of the web server's filesystem."
• If you switch to WordPress's default wp-sitemap.xml, deactivate the Yoast sitemap and llms.txt features first, then re-enable llms.txt after 5 minutes.

The llms.txt proposal also lists AIOSEO as a WordPress plugin with an llms.txt generator (llmstxt.org). We didn't fetch AIOSEO's own docs, so we don't give steps for it here (UNVERIFIED).

Route 2: manual upload

1. Write the file. Our generator produces one.
2. Upload it as llms.txt to the folder that serves your site root (usually where wp-config.php lives), using your host's file manager or SFTP.
3. Visit https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. It should load as plain text.
4. If a plugin also generates llms.txt, turn the plugin feature off or you'll have two sources fighting over one URL. (Which one wins depends on your server. UNVERIFIED in general, so test it.)

Subfolder installs

If WordPress lives at example.com/blog/, v2 of the proposal allows a file at /blog/llms.txt that covers pages under that path (llmstxt.org). Lighthouse's audit, however, looks at the domain root (see /lighthouse-llms-txt).

Plugin output vs hand-written

Auto-generated files list pages, but a generator can't know your gotchas. Consider adding the free-text notes the spec allows between the summary and the first section. If your plugin lets you edit that area, do it there. Otherwise, use the manual route.
